AbstractThis publication presents an introduction,"New Frontiers for a New Century: A National Overview" (Kati Haycock), which announces a new, online, interactive database of national educational records and discusses the importance of making necessary changes in education. This requires that educators, policymakers, and advocates receive solid information in order to shape policies and practices that will ensure the academic success of all students, particularly those traditionally underserved by public schools. As part of The Education Trust's "Education Watch" series, it highlights data from states leading the country in innovative educational change and offers a framework for immediate action. The main article, "Closing the Gap: Done in a Decade" (Kati Haycock, Craig Jerald, and Sandra Huang), examines a decade of educational achievement data, explaining that although most groups of American students made gains, particularly in math, the gaps separating minority students from white students and poor students from other students remain very wide and continue into college. Research shows that student achievement has less to do with a child's background than with instructional quality. It is important to study successful schools and examine important lessons learned, such as: clear public standards are essential; all students need a challenging curriculum aligned with standards; and every child deserves good teaching. (Contains 18 data charts and 12 references.) (SM)
