AbstractThis book reports on a collaborative research project to evaluate the conditions in Porta Farm, an informal settlement in Zimbabwe. Of particular interest to researchers was determining how children felt about their status, what they faced in their daily lives, where they came from, as well as what their future aspirations were and what interventions could be attempted to assist. The first chapter of the book provides an executive summary. Chapter 2 presents a background to the issues surrounding informal urban settlements in Zimbabwe, and explores some of the factors behind their expansion in the country. Chapter 3 contains a more detailed history of the research project itself, how it was done, what difficulties were encountered, the lessons learned, and the benefits that children derived from their participation. Chapter 4 details the research findings, and presents through drawings, quotes, interviews, and case studies the main issues faced by children raised in these communities. Main findings are presented under the following headings: issues of identity, the living environment, education, health, economic situation, vulnerability, and gender issues. The final chapter summarizes recommendations arising from the research. The book's several appendices provide more detail on research methodologies, current projects in Porta Farm and Dzivarasekwa, a list of other reading materials, and a glossary of terms. (SD)
