Abstract | This guide provides K-3 teachers with information to help foster positive social skills such as caring, cooperation, communication, and appreciation for diversity through music, movement, and language arts. The guide includes a recording with 46 easy-to-learn songs (20 of which are in both English and Spanish) to use with young children. The songs address such skills as: cooperating on shared activities; connecting to and expressing feelings; communicating needs and concerns; responding appropriately to others' messages; transforming conflicts by problem solving; sharing power with others; noticing and affirming diversity; actively promoting fairness; and seeking fulfillment from friendship, community, and self-worth. Classroom activities, implementation plans, and innovative extensions outline how to use music to effectively help children learn important social skills. The guide is divided into three parts with 8 chapters. Chapter 1, "Implementing Linking Up!," is followed by Part 1, "Songs for Circle Time," which includes (2) "Starting Songs: Gathering the Group" and (3) "Friendship Songs." Part 2, "Songs for the Social Skills Curriculum," includes (4) "Appreciating Diversity" and (5) "Conflict Resolution Songs." Part 3, "Songs for Movement Games," includes (6) "Nature Exploration Songs," (7) "Collaboration Songs," and (8) "Linking Up Songs." Several chapters are written in both English and Spanish. (SM) |
