AbstractThis report presents data on the Missouri teacher labor market, using existing administrative records about the state's public schools, teachers staffing them, and students attending them from 1994-95. Data are presented on: enrollment growth (size and distribution of public school enrollment changes); Missouri's teaching workforce (size and characteristics of Missouri's public school teacher workforce during 1994-95 and 1998-99 and changes occurring during the study); labor market dynamics (number of teachers who left public school districts and teaching for various reasons and overall school district hiring rates); teacher supply (estimated annual additions to the supply of certified teachers); and vacancies and the supply of newly certified teachers (demand for and supply of teachers in Missouri's public schools). Overall, the labor market provided teachers to accommodate most teacher turnover and growth from 1994-95 and 1998-99. Significant numbers of teachers came from nontraditional sources. Census classifications and Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education supervisory areas are appended. Also attached are: results from additional analyses conducted to investigate the role of pay in teachers' decisions to leave teaching; a district-level perspective on recruitment and retention in Missouri schools; and recommendations of the Commissioner's Task Force on Recruitment and Retention.
