Abstract | This collection of papers points out problems and challenges that face schools, colleges, and departments of education as change agents try to reform them. After "Introduction: Reforming Schools, Colleges, and Departments of Education" (William G. Tierney), nine papers include: (1) "The Public Responsibility of Public Schools of Education" (Jeannie Oakes and John Rogers); (2) "Incentives for Scholarship in Education Programs" (Mary M. Kennedy); (3) "Resisting Reform: Tenure, Productivity, and the Public School Crisis" (Yvonna S. Lincoln); (4) "Faculty of Education in a Period of Systemic Reform" (William G. Tierney); (5) "The Evolving Production Functions of Schools of Education" (Sarah E. Turner); (6) "Clinical Faculty in Schools of Education: Using Staff Differentiation To Address Disparate Goals" (James C. Hearn and Melissa S. Anderson); (7) "Professors of Education and Academic Freedom: Uncharted Waters" (Philo Hutcheson); (8) "The Fragmented Paradigm: Women, Tenure, and Schools of Education" (Judith Glazer-Raymo); and (9) "Graduate Student Socialization and Its Implications for the Recruitment of African American Education Faculty" (James Soto Antony and Edward Taylor).
