| Abstract | The Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) is managed by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development as part of its mandate to foster science and technology in the Canadian North. NSTP supports Canadian universities in providing training that gives advanced and graduate students the opportunity to gain professional experience in the Canadian North and encourages them to develop a commitment to northern work. The program provides supplementary financial assistance to universities to defray transportation costs, living expenses, freight costs, and interpreter fees encountered during portions of research projects that involve supervised field experience in the Canadian North and other circumpolar countries. This report provides a summary of program activities and a statistical overview of the support for northern studies allocated to Canadian universities from 1962-63 to 2000-2001. Information is presented in table and graph form on allocations by university; number of universities funded by year; distribution of students and universities funded by province; distribution of funds by type of support, scientific field, and geographic focus; distribution of students supported by scientific field and academic focus; and university funding requests for the year 2000-2001. Appendices present contact information for NSTP committee members and university chairpersons, institutes or committees for northern studies, and summaries of research activities supported by the NSTP. Activities, some of which were conducted in Indigenous communities, were in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, education, environmental sciences/ecology, sociology, physical and human geography, biology, and health.
