Abstract | This curriculum unit is designed to give primary school students foreign language experiences and also to support the cultural literacy strand of the California State History-Social Science Framework. The unit is part of an elementary literature series which utilizes quality primary source literature from various world regions and countries and which focuses on thematic and whole language approaches to literature. The unit is presented in both an English and Spanish version. It begins with an introduction which describes and discusses a Mexican story, "Dedos de Luna," which is about the relationship between a young boy and his grandfather in rural Mexico. Ten lessons follow: (1A) "My Grandparents and I" (contains 2 handouts); (1B) "The Seasons of Life" (contains a visual aid and 2 handouts); (2A) "Dedos de Luna Part 1" (contains 2 teacher's guides); (2B) "Mask Traditions of Mexico" (contains 2 handouts and an activity); (3A) "Word Games with Tono" (contains 2 handouts, a visual aid, and an activity); (3B) "Festival Activity Skills" (contains 4 handouts and a visual aid); (4A) "Dedos de Luna Part 2" (contains a handout and an activity); (4B) "Learning to Comfort" (contains a handout and an activity); (5A) "What Now, Tono?"; and (5B) "The Fiesta" (contains a teacher's guide).
