| Abstract | This report contains seven articles on current issues in higher education and a separate faculty salary report for 1998-1999. Articles on the status of the profession are: (1) "Faculty Salaries, 1998-99" (Suzanne B. Clery and John B. Lee); (2) "Innovative Approaches to Bargaining" (Gary Rhoades and Christine Maitland); (3) "Union Organizing and the Law: Part-Time Faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistants" (Gregory M. Saltzman); (4) "Accountability: Challenges for Higher Education" (William Zumeta); (5) "Benefits and Retirement: Challenges for the New Century" (Jay L. Chronister); (6) "Higher Education Finance Variable: An Analysis" (Deagelia M. Pena); and (7) "Higher Education Staff: Bearing the Brunt of Cost Containment" (Linda K. Johnsrud). The institutional faculty salary report provides salary and compensation information for 3,128 institutions. Data, which are organized by state, institutional type, and control, are based on 1998-1999 data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Each chapter contains references.
