AbstractThe essays in this volume center around John Dewey's mandate that American democracy requires civic engagement to realize the potential of its citizens and its communities, and that education is the key to that engagement. Following an introductory chapter, "Higher Education and the Development of Civic Responsibility" (Anne Colby and Thomas Ehrlich, with Elizabeth Beaumont, Jennifer Roser, and Jason Stephens), the chapters in Part 1, "What Are the Problems: Higher Education and Its Students," are: (1) "Citizenship Development and the American College Student" (Linda J. Sax); (2) "Institutional Identity and Social Responsibility in Higher Education" (William M. Sullivan); and (3) "Renewing the Democratic Spirit in American Colleges and Universities: Higher Education as Public Work" (Harry C. Boyte and Nancy N. Kari). In Part 2, "What Are Colleges and Universities Doing about the Problem: An Overview," the chapters are: (4) "The College and University as Citizen" (Nancy L. Thomas); (5) "Educational Missions and Civic Responsibility: Toward the Engaged Academy" (Carol Geary Schneider); and (6) "The Civic Challenge of Educating the Underprepared Student" (Alexander W. Astin). In Part 3, "Interactions with Other Sectors of Society," the chapters are: (7) "How Concepts of Politics Control Concepts of Civic Responsibility" (David Mathews); (8) "How Far In? How Far Out? Civic Responsibility and the Journalism Educator" (Jay Rosen); (9) "Integrating the American System of Higher, Secondary, and Primary Education To Develop Civic Responsibility" (Lee Benson and Ira Harkavy); and (10) "Supporting Community Involvement in the Digital Age" (Penelope Eckert and Peter Henschel). In Part 4, "Perspectives from Different Sectors of Higher Education," the chapters are: (11) "A Community College Perspective" (Paul A. Elsner); (12) "The Perspective of a Comprehensive University" (Judith A. Ramaley); (13) "A Liberal Arts College Perspective" (Gregory S. Prince, Jr.); (14) "A Historically Black College Perspective" (Gloria Dean Randle Scott); (15) "A Religious-Based College and University Perspective" (William J. Byron); and (16) "A Research University Perspective" (Mary Lindenstein Walshok). Chapters in Part 5, "Special Challenges," are: (17) "Civic Engagement and the Academic Disciplines" (Edward Zlotkowski); (18) "Accounting for the Civic Role: Assessment and Accountability Strategies for Civic Education and Institutional Service" (Jane V. Wellman); and (19) "Civic Renewal in Higher Education: The State of the Movement and the Need for a National Network" (Elizabeth Hollander and Matthew Hartley). The book closes with an Afterword written by Zelda F. Gamson. (All the essays contain notes.) (CH)
