AbstractThis booklet provides information regarding the use of universal free breakfast programs and guidance to schools that wish to start such a program. Written for school officials and breakfast advocates, the guide discusses the benefits of a universal free school breakfast program, the options available, and basic operational issues, so that officials will be equipped to promote and implement such programs. Moreover, the document contains ideas from schools that have successful universal breakfast programs. The guide's sections cover: (1) a description of the School Breakfast Program; (2) the importance of breakfast; (3) the importance of universal free school breakfast programs; (4) how a universal school breakfast program works; (5) advantages of universal school breakfast programs (improves academic outcomes, removes stigma, raises awareness and participation, improves attendance and behavior, improves nutritional status, increases reimbursements, and reduces administrative burden); (6) getting started; (7) gaining support; and (8) program suggestions and promotional methods (promotions, transportation, staff, and creative service systems). Appendices cover alternative reporting methods, states with financial incentives, and calculating breakfast costs. (Contains 24 references.) (EV)
