Abstract | This document describes the experiences of 13 unemployed adults who participated in job training that was provided by the Croydon Continuing Education and Training Service in the London borough of Croydon with funding from the European Social Fund from 1995-1997. The document begins with an overview of the two projects: the New Addington NOW (New Opportunities for Women) project, which provided job training to 302 single parents who had been unemployed for more than a year, and the Thornton Heath/South Norwood Horizon project, which provided English-as-a-second-language and job training courses to 1,890 unemployed refugees and ethnic minorities to develop fluency in English and gain job skills. In the next three sections, trainees' own words are used to describe the following: trainees' backgrounds and the motives and circumstances behind their choice of courses; trainees' progress and factors that helped or hindered their training; and trainees' activities after completing their courses. Each of these sections ends with a list of good practices that facilitated trainees' success in their courses. Concluding the document are a model detailing progression routes and support systems for effective training programs and the trainees' recommendations for development and delivery of short-term job training programs for disadvantaged individuals.
