| Abstract | This instructional guide is intended to be used with the six-part videotape "Russia and the Other Former Soviet Republics in Transition." The guide comprises essays that provide critical background information needed to understand the issues and events under discussion, which are the new countries that have grown out of the former Soviet Union; lesson plans; transcripts from the aforementioned videotape; glossary; bibliography; statistical grids; and maps. The guide opens with a preface, information on authors and reviewers, and biographical sketches of government officials, moderators, and guest experts. It is then divided into the following six lessons, each of which corresponds to a videotape segment: (1) "Russia and the Other Former Soviet Republics: An Overview"; (2)"Politics and Government"; (3) "Economics"; (4) "Society, Culture, and the Environment"; (5) "Foreign Policy Issues"; and (6) "U.S. Interests." Each lesson offers three varied and detailed activities for students to focus on and research. (BT) |
