Abstract | This interdisciplinary guide provides activities, discussion questions, and information to help teachers use the series of five special PBS programs entitled "A Science Odyssey" in the classroom. For each Science Odyssey program, the guide features: (1) an overview of the program; (2) a summary of program contents and story segments; (3) a thematic feature designed to spark student thoughts and interest; (4) several suggested activities and an in-depth investigation related to the program topic. Program titles include: (1) "Matters of Life and Death," which addresses how remarkable breakthroughs in surgery, drugs, and medical technology raise ethical questions and change our assumptions about life and death; (2) "Mysteries of the Universe," which details how twin revolutions in physics and astronomy have transformed our perceptions of the universe; (3) "In Search of Ourselves," which covers our scientific attempts to solve the puzzle of human behavior; (4) "Better, Bigger, Faster," which addresses the ways in which new technologies such as the automobile, synthetic materials, and computers have changed our lifestyles; and (5) "Origins," which addresses the scientific discoveries that have helped explain the origins of our planet and our species.
