AbstractThis handbook provides information to occupational therapy clinicians and students with disabilities, fieldwork educators, and employers on issues of accommodation, disclosure, rights, responsibilities, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It begins with a discussion of the disability rights movement, and employment and people with disabilities. The first chapter, "Guide to the Laws," provides an overview of federal civil rights laws, employment laws, and actions that constitute discrimination. Chapter 2, "Rights and Responsibilities," discusses disclosure of a disability, confidentiality, employment rights of individuals with a disability, and employer rights and responsibilities. The following chapter, "Essential Job Functions," describes the determination of essential job functions and provides examples of occupational therapy essential job functions and job descriptions. Chapter 4, "Fieldwork and Students with Disabilities," discusses laws governing the education of students with disabilities, the process for determining acceptability of interns, and responsibility for accommodations. The next chapter, "Employment," addresses nondiscrimination, pre-employment inquiries, recruitment, interviewing, workers' compensation, and tax credit programs. The final two chapters provide information on basic principals of reasonable accommodation, types of accommodations, and myths and facts about the ADA. A list of resource organizations is provided. Appendixes contain American Occupational Therapy Association position papers. (CR)
