AbstractThis booklet provides classroom activities related to diversity. The activities are designed to help teachers disrupt their schools' dependency on the textbook, the lecture, and the search for the one and only answer, offering a way to introduce difference and acceptance and to enhance new dialogues with students and colleagues. The booklet offers a variety of activities that engage students in the process of understanding the need for friendships and acceptance of others. Teachers can use the booklet to help create a sense of community in the classroom as they introduce students to new ways of thinking about relationships. After an introduction, the first section describes a number of instructional strategies that address the needs of all students, noting that many approaches intended to individualize instruction for students with special needs are useful for all students. This section offers answers to several questions frequently asked when teachers are struggling to incorporate new ways of thinking and acting in their classrooms. The remainder of the book presents the classroom activities, most of which help enhance self-esteem, introduce diversity, encourage discussion and acceptance of differences, introduce the concept of inclusive communities, examine new ways of approaching life, focus on handling new situations, teach about peer support and friendship, and discuss labeling.
