AbstractThis book offers a critique of the current state of academe, focusing on such issues as what constitutes a well-rounded curriculum or an educated citizen, are business principles developed almost a century ago still viable, the public perception of college campus activities, and the "decline" of academia. The book's overall intent is to suggest how higher education institutions can better serve the needs of their constituencies. In the introductory chapter the book sets forth the boundaries of the issues: revenue shortfalls, changes in the workforce and the workplace, the impact of technology, and what constitutes an "academic community," It also defines what it considers to be academe's necessary commitments to an educational community, to academic freedom, to access and equity, to excellence and integrity, and to inquiry. Finally, this chapter sets out a framework for a different type of learning organization. The next six chapters expand on this framework and are titled: (1) "Organizational Redesign"; (2) "The New Face of Leadership"; (3) "Organizational Attention Deficit Disorder: Evaluating High Performance"; (4) "Faculty Productivity and Organizational Culture"; (5) The Chiaroscuro of Reform"; and (6) "The 21st Century Organization." A final chapter provides answers to some frequently asked questions. (Contains 84 references.) (CH)
