AbstractThis study explored the association between tenure and college faculty productivity by comparing the efficacy of traditional and alternative definitions of faculty productivity and different productivity measurement systems. Specifically, the study addressed how college faculty use their time, how time spent on "scholarly" activities compares to time spent on other activities, differences between tenured and nontenured faculty in traditional "scholarly" productivity, differences in productivity between groups when scholarship is defined more broadly, and policy implications for using traditional and nontraditional forms of productivity evaluation. Data were drawn from the 1993 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty which sampled 974 institutions and 31,354 faculty. Results show that faculty with tenure are not less productive than their counterparts without tenure. Tenured faculty teach less than nontenured faculty but engage in more service and administrative activity. Results suggest that post-tenure review systems often recognize the multidimensional nature of faculty work; they also suggest that pretenure faculty work that extends beyond the scope of traditional scholarship should be recognized as important in the tenure decision process.
