AbstractDuring 1993 and 94, the University of Hawaii performed a study of local organizations in the tourist/hospitality industry, assessing employer satisfaction with the graduates and products of the public school system and community colleges. Specifically, the study aimed to determine if participants of training programs were making a successful transition from school to workplace. Forty-three interviews were conducted, targeting managers, owners, supervisors, and/or staff from human resources offices. The study used a sample stratified by organizational size and type of service provided, with hotels and restaurants dominating the group. All firms selected were characterized as service industries, but some also fell into other general categories (hotels could also be categorized as free-standing resorts that offered recreation, entertainment, restaurants, and shopping in addition to lodging). Almost all firms hired employees who had taken vocational, technical, or occupationally oriented class while in high school; three-quarters of the sample preferred to hire applicants from community colleges who had obtained relevant skills training. In addition, more than half of the organizations queried felt that community colleges were doing well in achieving their goals of job preparation. Provided in the report are data on secondary and postsecondary schools and interviewee comments. Appended are additional comments, standards, and interview instruments. (AS)
