Abstract | The report details a federally-funded program at the University of Texas, Austin whose activities included: (1) an experimental summer intensive language institute to facilitate Brazilian Portuguese certification for nine certified secondary school teachers of Spanish; (2) writing and publication of a new textbook of Brazilian Portuguese for Spanish speakers; (3) writing, evaluation, and publication of four-skills placement and proficiency tests in Brazilian Portuguese; (4) training of an official American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) oral proficiency interview rater; (5) the hosting of a national conference on teaching and testing and periodic workshops for the textbook and testing teams; and (6) establishment of a national center for Brazilian Portuguese.
