Abstract | This paper presents campus crime statistics for 1993 and 1994 and discusses overall trends in court workloads and criminology. An annotated summary of news reports, books, and legal citations regarding incidents and court findings related to education and particularly higher education are provided. The information is compiled from the Chronicle of Higher Education and from the Westlaw law reporting service. The reader is reminded that individual case decisions do not necessarily have standing in other cases and that the decisions of a Circuit Court are binding only in the states included in that circuit. The topics include: discipline, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and how it has been applied in cases of faculty and administration communication with students and others, and information technology such as the use of the Internet and free term paper services. Other topics addressed are: instructional issues including educational malpractice; athletics; campus crime; rape and sexual assault; sexual harassment; diversity and minority issues; gay, lesbian and bisexual issues; the Americans with Disabilities Act; torts (liability issues); substance use and fraternities; and campus protests.
