Abstract | This book is designed to provide teachers with numerous ideas about how to infuse mathematics and writing into their classroom in creative and challenging ways and to encourage students to visualize, speak, and write about math. The activities described here can help students communicate mathematically and realize that there is more to math than computation alone. They range from writing in various forms to writing to express a feeling to giving directions. Each activity also includes a teaching tip or an activity extension which gives further suggestions on how to organize or introduce the activities and how to take them to another level. Many activities are also accompanied by student samples that show how students were able to make math and writing connections work for them. Topics include defining terms, mathematical concepts, mathematical symbols, mathematical captions, days of the month, special numbers, math manipulatives, word problems, math games, fractions, making change, art in problem solving, recipes as mathematical springboards, explanation of problem solving, estimation, measurement, temperature, feelings about math activities, cooperative learning, programming time on television, daily uses of math, and posters and slogans.
