AbstractThis report addresses the issue of "academic productivity," and the critical views of academia held by the public. The section titled "Quality Academics, Quality Productivity," posits that using new notions of productivity, with their emphasis on quality rather than quantity, will allow academia to increase its own productivity, with faculty as the key. To this end, the paper suggests that outdated quantitative approaches be discarded and calls for new performance models and better ways to measure quality. A nine-point quality agenda is proposed for the State University of New York (SUNY). In "Meeting the Productivity Challenge: System and Campus Performance Reports," the author says that the time has come for colleges and universities to present performance reports to the public, despite the challenge of reconciling autonomy and accountability within the university system. A need for flexibility, for system accountability, for setting performance indicators, and for setting systemwide macro indicators is seen as these dicta are applied to five generic "SUNY 2000" goals. Following the report, five tables detail the funding context and system and campus indicators that summarize "The Condition of SUNY." (CH)
