Abstract | Genuine educational reform depends on developing relationships with the home, community groups, politicians, and the business community (Seeley, 1981). This volume is the second of three reports that are products of a 3.5 year study of education reform, with a focus on the role of parent, family, and community involvement in the middle grades. The study focused on comprehensive districtwide parent and community involvement programs, school restructuring, and school-initiated adult-child learning programs. This volume presents the full text of each of the nine case studies, which resulted from site visits that were conducted during the 1993-94 school year. The case studies are organized around six topics--context, program (including planning, design, and implementation), challenges, supports, outcomes, and lessons. The case studies include three comprehensive districtwide parent and community involvement programs: Jefferson County Public Schools (Louisville, Kentucky); Minneapolis Public Schools (Minneapolis, Minnesota); and Fort Worth Independent School District (Fort Worth, Texas). The three school-restructuring programs included Lamoni Middle School (Lamoni, Iowa); Beck Middle School (Georgetown, South Carolina); and Shelburne Middle School (Shelburne, Vermont). The three adult/child learning activities (or home learning) programs were located in: Natchez-Adams School District (Natchez, Mississippi); Community School District Number 3 (New York, New York); and Rochester Public Schools (Rochester, New York.)
