Abstract	This activity provides students with case studies of family life in Japan for them to make hypotheses about the traditions, social institutions, and values of the Japanese people. The case studies were written by teachers who spend 1- and 2-day homestays with both rural and urban families during a 3-week study tour to Japan in 1988. The case studies have been edited to omit personal opinions and conclusions of the writers and expose students to different styles of reporting data. The student objectives are to: (1) categorize data about contemporary Japanese society and make hypotheses based on the data; (2) identify ways in which Japanese families have blended aspects of traditional and contemporary culture; (3) cite examples that illustrate both diversity and homogeneity among families in Japan; (4) recognize interconnections between Japanese society and other world cultures; and (5) analyze and evaluate source material.
