Abstract | Intended to address classroom diversity that covers race, religion, language, economic status, and physical and mental abilities, this book argues that public education is going to reach a point where it will not work unless the growing diversity in schools is thoughtfully examined. The book suggests many easy-to-implement activities for use in the multicultural classroom. It considers ways to become more successful in addressing diversity by taking a look at ways to: (1) gather data; (2) decide how to get started; (3) pass on what has been learned; (4) help students begin to work together and accept one another in groups; (5) help the adults in the school community come together to accept multiculturalism and value diversity; (6) help students acknowledge their uniqueness and the uniqueness of others; and (7) ensure professional growth and support in all of these endeavors. In the book particular attention is paid to the historical view of public education and diversity, using multicultural literature, and effective communication among teachers and administrators and parents. The book concludes with a list of other resources, and a list of helpful journals and organizations. Contains an extensive reference list. (NKA) |
