Abstract | This learning module was developed during a project to deliver workplace literacy instruction to individuals employed in the more than 50 businesses related to the activities of the Port of Baltimore. It contains a sample of individual lessons that the project instructors used in individualized tutorial sessions with students working on reading, writing, and math skills. The module is divided into seven sections on the following topics: solving word problems in mathematics; using measurement; completing a port insurance worksheet; using coherent sentence structure; avoiding jargon in writing; developing reading comprehension skills; and developing the technical reading skills required to read graphs, charts, and maps. Each section includes objectives, procedures, student handouts, learning activities/problems, and answer sheets. (MN) |
