Abstract | This set of learning modules was developed during a project to deliver workplace literacy instruction to individuals employed in the more than 50 businesses related to the activities of the Port of Baltimore. It is intended to help office staff of port businesses develop basic interpersonal communication and time and stress management skills. The following topics are covered in the individual modules: the importance of high quality service; telephone techniques/manners, the needs of office visitors, and professionalism; organizing work space, setting goals, managing time, and maintaining a positive image; managing stress; understanding and using the different types of listening; practicing active listening; identifying good and bad listeners; and giving and receiving feedback. Each module contains objectives, procedures, student handouts, and learning activities/grammar exercises. Appended is an article titled "What Do We Listen For?" (Raudsepp) and supplementary information about listening, constructive communication, and active listening. Answers to all exercises and the pretest and posttest are included. (MN) |
