| Abstract | This examination of audio card systems for computers begins by identifying the three information processing systems for sound: sound digitizing, synthesis of text, and word recognition. Specific pedagogical applications of digitized sound are then briefly discussed. The remainder of the document focuses on specifications for the working of vocal cards. This is divided into the three techniques mentioned above. The first section is concerned with digitizing sound and covers topics such as sampling, quantification, storage and capacity, compression, and filters. The second section concentrates on speech recognition by computers, including obstacles to vocal recognition, speaker systems, discontinuous speech or enforced continuous speech, recognized vocabulary, error rate and rejects, and restrictions of use. Discussion of speech synthesis starting from texts in the third section covers its current state of development and possible future educational applications. (JLB) |
