AbstractThis handbook is designed to help policymakers and providers meet the educational needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and develop access to postcompulsory education for hearing-impaired adults. The following topics are covered: deafness and difference (the culture and identity of deaf people, images of deafness, voluntary organizations, and prevalence of hearing impairments); language and communication (communication needs of hearing-impaired people, British Sign Language interpreter training, training for communicators, and provision of the most relevant communication support); meeting communication needs (technological and human aids to communication and concerns and issues); barriers to access (barriers before, during, and after a program of study and collaborating to overcome them); learning opportunities (identifying needs, adult basic education, information technology, health promotion, courses for minority adults, counseling, work-based training and learning, deaf studies, and suitable teaching strategies); styles and settings for learning (integrated courses and open and distance learning); staff development and training (language and communication training and general communication guidelines); and funding, management, and policy issues.
