Abstract | This paper reports on a study of the oral communication between international university students in an intensive English program (IEP) and office support staff at the IEP office. The study was based on audiotaped observations and interviews of students and office staff, along with questionnaires distributed to all 150 students enrolled in the IEP. It found that miscommunication often occurred due to differences in social and grammatical construction by the speakers. The paper offers suggestions for improving communication between office staff and IEP students, including the development of a staff training program, information booklets for students, and an IEP student center. Three appendixes provide copies of the student questionnaire, questionnaire responses, and a conversation transcript. (MDM) |
