AbstractThe 900 Schools Programme, adopted in March 1990, was designed to improve the quality of education in Chile's most impoverished public primary schools through "positive discrimination," the channeling of additional resources to the 969 schools that initially took part in the project. The 900 Schools Programme has sought to: (1) improve the infrastructure of schools; (2) conduct weekly in-service workshops for teachers; (3) provide specially-designed didactic materials for mathematics, reading, and writing instruction, along with technological improvements in the classroom; (4) make sure that all primary students have their own language, mathematics, and science textbooks; and (5) hold learning workshops after school for children with learning disabilities. Both the design and implementation of the 900 Schools Programme are discussed, as well as evaluations of the strengths and weaknesses of the project. (MDM)
