AbstractThis study compared students with learning disabilities who participated in open enrollment in Minnesota with their nondisabled peers, in terms of reasons for transfer, source of information about open enrollment, parent involvement with the school, and demographics. The study involved a survey of 59 families of students with learning disabilities and 60 families of nondisabled children participating in open enrollment. Reasons for using open enrollment were more similar than different for the two groups. Many parents believed that the chosen school would provide educational services which would better meet their child's needs. Both groups received open enrollment information from the media and school principals. Parents of students with learning disabilities were more likely than other parents to get information from school staff. Parent involvement was similar for the two groups, with both groups reporting fewer parents volunteering and fewer parents serving on school and district committees after the child's transfer.
