AbstractZambia's Health Education News radio program, which was launched in 1982, features 15-minute broadcasts in English and several local languages. The primary objectives of the radio program are to encourage individuals to attend various health clinics and get their children immunized, teach communities to value their health, make people accept responsibility for their own health, and provide information on the symptoms and prevention of some common diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has encouraged Zambia's Ministry of Health to seek cooperation from other ministries and agencies involved in health promotion and share radio airtime with them. The WHO has also developed a series of preproject considerations, planning and management strategies, airtime-scheduling and manpower guidelines, and market research/testing guidelines for Zambian radio. This document also contains an analysis of the strategies used in radio broadcasting to inform and educate communities and a discussion of various program formats, including radio forum, open broadcasting, listening groups and tape recordings, letter spot programs, competitions, discussion panels, storytelling, spot announcements, incorporation of music and soap opera format into health promotion programs, and interviews. (Also included are 20 references/suggested readings.) (MN)
