Abstract | This document is one of eight in a series of guides designed to help teach and counsel troubled youth. It contains 20 lessons that focus on a variety of coping skills. Lesson 1 helps students to reduce their anxiety and to learn that it is normal and expectable to make mistakes. Several lessons offer suggestions on ways to help to build students' self-esteem and to help students to work cooperatively and make more honest contributions during group counseling sessions. Other lessons help students learn more effective ways to interact with parents and siblings at home; to acknowledge their own personal improvements; and to evaluate their dependence on substances, people, or other things. One lesson helps students to understand themselves in the context of their past and future; several others help students to evaluate gang membership. Other lessons focus on actually making changes, providing feedback, and understanding the costs on one's actions before one acts. A number of lessons focus on denial and how to break through it, especially as it relates to gang activities and dependency. (NB) |
