AbstractThis volume examines critical issues, significant events, and the contributions of key individuals and institutions to the history of the teaching of psychology in higher education. The 22 chapters in 5 sections were contributed by various authors. Section I treats general issues in teaching psychology and includes: "Evolution of Undergraduate Curriculum in Psychology, 1892-1992" (Thomas V. McGovern); "Collegiate Career Advising: Status, Antecedents, and Strategies" (Mark E. Ware); "The Socratic-Sophistic Continuum in Teaching Psychology and Psychological Research in America" (John J. Furedy); and "International Development of Psychology as an Academic Discipline" (Helio Carpintero). Section II describes key individuals and includes the following chapters: "Psychologists as Teachers: Sketches Toward a History of Teaching During 100 Years of American Psychology" (Donald A. Dewsbury and Wade E. Pickren); "A Brief History of the American Psychological Foundation's Award for Distinguished Teachers of Psychology" (David J. Pittenger); "Women: Their Influence and Their Impact on the Teaching of Psychology" (Florence L. Denmark and Linda C. Fernandez); "Ethnic Minorities in the Teaching of Psychology" (L. Phillip Guzman, R. Steven Schiavo, and Antonio E. Puente); and "'I Was Just Lucky': An Interview with Model Teacher Wilbert J. McKeachie" (Jane S. Halonen). Section III highlights important conferences in the following chapters: "National Conferences on Undergraduate Psychology" (Margaret A. Lloyd and Charles L. Brewer); "Education and Training Conferences in Graduate Education" (Cynthia Belar); "Conferences on Internship and Postdoctoral Training" (Cynthia Belar); and "Regional Conferences for Teachers and Students of Psychology" (Stephen F. Davis, Randolph A. Smith). Section IV looks at the role of professional associations in the advancement of teaching and includes: "The American Psychological Association and the Teaching of Psychology, 1892-1945" (C. James Goodwin); "Advancing the Teaching of Psychology: Contributions of the American Psychological Association, 1946-1992" (Paul D. Nelson and George Stricker); "Division in Search of Self: A History of the APA Division 2, the Division of the Teaching of Psychology" (Randall D. Wight and Stephen F. Davis); "A Quartet of Councils Interested in the Teaching of Psychology" (Randolph A. Smith); and "Psi Chi and Psi Beta: The Two National Honor Societies in Psychology" (Ruth Hubbard Cousins, Carol Tracy, and Peter J. Giordano). Section V reviews key publications in: "Teaching of Psychology, the Journal" (Robert S. Daniel); "Portraits of a Discipline: An Examination of Introductory Psychology Textbooks in America" (Wayne Weiten and Randall D. Wight); "Psychological Handbooks: History and Function" (James L. Pate); and "Constancy and Change: Teaching as Depicted in Psychology Journals" (Bernard C. Beins). Most chapters cite extensive references. (JB)
