Abstract | The purpose of this research was to compare two different forms of a placement test in French as a second language at the post-secondary level, a conventional test and a computerized test. First, expectations regarding a placement test as a measure of general proficiency are discussed and principles of adaptive testing that have been used to design the computerized test are presented. Then, the development of the two forms is explained and their psychometric properties are described. Finally, a theoretical and experimental comparison is made between the two forms. It appears that the computerized test is more accurate because of its focus and it does not give rise to any negative reactions from the students. (Contains over 300 references.) (Author) |
