Abstract | This curriculum is designed to meet the unique needs of single parents and displaced homemakers who require additional skill building before entering the job market or a job training program. The curriculum, which is designed as a 36-hour program instruction, contains units on the following topics: taking responsibility for oneself (assessing self-esteem, assessing self-talk, making transitions, maintaining wellness, understanding one's legal rights); communicating effectively (effective verbal communication, listening, and behavior); balancing family, school, and self (managing stress, time, and finances; developing a personal support system; and nurturing other family members and friends); and enhancing effectiveness (developing self-motivation, making appropriate and realistic decisions, accessing role models/mentors, attaining/enhancing basic academic skills; and understanding differences in the work force). Each unit contains the following: unit overview, list of instructor resources, instructor notes, handouts, and activity sheets. Guidelines for leading class discussions and a list of eight workbooks referenced throughout the curriculum are also included. (MN) |
