AbstractA case study examined the similarities and differences in the background characteristics, the nature and causes of the English language-based problems, and the coping strategies of two foreign students at Indiana University, Bloomington. Subjects were selected because they represented two different nationalities (Malaysian and Indonesian), genders, age groups, educational levels (graduate and undergraduate), fields of study, and colonial educational backgrounds. Data included responses to a questionnaire, personal interviews, classroom observation,and examination of student essays and lecture notes. Commonalities between the two cases were found in the following areas: speaking the Malay language which is the official language of both Indonesia and Malaysia; positive parental attitude and encouragement about learning English; the reasons for learning English; the nature and causes of English language-based problems; strategies used to overcome language problems and achieve academic success; perceived improvement in academic reading skills; and lack of perceived improvement in verbal and non-verbal communication. The two cases showed some major differences in their personal and academic backgrounds, reasons for learning English, and the amount of English instruction received. In spite of important differences, the language problems of the two cases did not significantly differ. (RS)
