Abstract | In this document, students examine the economic and military concerns that linked the history of the Caribbean and Central America to the United States. Organized into four chapters, the first chapter examines the history of U.S. relations with the Caribbean and Central America from the early 19th century to 1961. The second chapter focuses on the Cuban missile crisis, and how U.S. differences with Cuba became entangled with the larger U.S.-Soviet confrontation in the early 1960s. The third chapter examines U.S. foreign policy towards Cuba from the end of the Cuban missile crisis to the end of the Cold War. The fourth chapter looks at the future of U.S. policy toward the Caribbean and Central America. Students are asked to consider the merits of three alternative policies the United States might pursue in these regions. (DB) |
