AbstractGrowing Up Strong (GUS) is a curriculum designed to develop strong mental and physical health in kindergarten through sixth grade students, with the objective of preventing subsequent substance abuse. This document contains a teacher's guide for using GUS in second and third grade classrooms (GUS 2-3) and duplication masters of materials that can be sent home with children to promote family involvement in GUS. Part I of the five-part teacher's guide provides background information about the program, GUS's comprehensive prevention approach, major components of the GUS 2-3 program, and the creation and use of Gus and Gussie dolls and puppets. Part II includes information on using GUS, the GUS Observable Behavior Checklist Level II, and the family involvement information and activity handouts. Part III offers suggestions on classroom management, ways to teach problem solving, positive reinforcement, cooperative learning, and children's art; and lists 50 children's books and 14 print and organizational resources for the teacher. Part IV provides instructional units on personal safety, drugs, socially acceptable behavior, and other activities designed to help children develop socially, creatively, emotionally, and verbally. Part V presents reinforcement activities for children with special needs, covering sensory learning, hygiene, nutrition, feelings, and other topics. The materials designed for children to take home include information sheets for parents on GUS and such topics as primary prevention, drug facts, and physical health; sheets that offer suggestions on encouraging children's reading, setting a good example, and helping children make responsible choices; and sheets to help children express themselves in drawings and writing. Sample awards for children, the GUS Observable Behavior Checklist, and GUS promotional materials are attached. (AC)
