Abstract | This yearbook, a retrospective and prospective exploration of educational change, focuses on the challenges of curriculum, instructional supervision, and leadership for education in the United States. The yearbook opens with a foreword by Stephanie Pace Marshall, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) President, 1992-93, and "Introduction in American Education" (Gordon Cawelti). The publication is then organized into eight chapters: (1) "Equity: A Call to Action" (Floretta Dukes McKenzie); (2) "Progress toward Professionalism in Teaching" (Linda Darling-Hammond and A. Lin Goodwin); (3) "The Growth of Assessment" (George F. Madaus and Ann G. A. Tan); (4) "Curriculum Reform" (William H. Schubert); (5) "Innovation, Reform, and Restructuring Strategies" (Michael Fullan); (6) "Inventing and Reinventing Ideas: Constructivist Teaching and Learning in Mathematics" (Penelope L. Peterson and Nancy F. Knapp); (7) "Change and Continuity in Supervision and Leadership" (Edward Pajak); and (8) "Important Education-Related U.S. Supreme Court Decisions (1943 to 1993)" (Cheryl D. Mills). "Conclusion: The Search for a System" (Gordon Cawelti) seeks to interpret how the topics discussed in the yearbook fit into current efforts to reform the U.S. system of education. (LL) |
