| Abstract | Findings from a study of school restructuring models and their impact on the teaching/learning process are presented in this report. Following an overview of different restructuring approaches, a theoretical model for restructuring is described. Next, the restructuring practices implemented by the Stearns Elementary School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, are examined. The case study identifies a theoretical model for schools' inductive developmental approach to educational change. An evaluation of the Stearns model's efficacy in regard to rules, roles, relationships, and results found the following changes: increased shared governance, use of strategies to enhance students' self-confidence, and expanded curriculum and teaching methods. Recommendations are made to specify expectations for student outcomes and to engage in more reflection and strategic planning. Appendices contain the Stearns School philosophy, organizational chart, and constitution, and summaries of Massachusetts Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) results, Stearns/MEAP comparisons, and the MEAP action plan.
