Abstract | A project was conducted to develop a 2 + 2 articulated training program in health careers to link the last 2 years of secondary and the first 2 years of postsecondary training. During the second year of the secondary project, the first year of training was implemented and the model program was further developed and refined. Project tasks included the following: (1) organization of a technical advisory committee; (2) development of competency profiles, a tool/equipment list, basic course outlines, recommended teacher approval criteria, and an evaluation, student monitoring, and follow-up system; (3) implementation of the grade 11 curriculum (Health Careers I); and (4) program evaluation. The project developed a 2 + 2 articulated competency-based curriculum for registered nurses. The use of a career ladder concept provided opportunities for students to exit the program at grade 12 (nurse aide), grade 13 (licensed vocational nurse), and grade 14. Development of performance exams validated by industry and development of state guidelines and definitions were recommended. (Appendixes, amounting to most of the report, contain the following: advisory committee meeting minutes; matrix of grade 11-12 competencies and essential elements--Health Careers I-II; procedural plan for teacher qualification; quarterly reports; and competencies for physical therapy assistant/aide, medical laboratory technician/phlebotomist, radiologic technologist/assistant, and medical assistant.)
