| Abstract | "A Vision for the Future," a comprehensive long-range plan to develop, implement, and evaluate a multipart program to reduce the dropout rate in the Charleston, South Carolina, school district, is described in this report. Goals and objectives are presented, followed by a description of 18 intervention strategies. Components of the plan include improved reporting of data on student performance, grade retention, and attrition; replication and extension of effective instructional projects in grades K-12, with a focus on reading instruction for at-risk first- through third-graders; focusing resources on at-risk populations; outcome-based evaluation; and conducting school effectiveness research. Appendices contain implementation plans for 19 interventions, a phase-in chart, and lists of task force members and subcommittee assignments. Three figures are included. (25 references) (LMI) |
