Abstract	This study examined the application of adaptive behavior assessment to a gifted population. It addressed the following questions: (1) "What is the nature of adaptive behavior in gifted children?"; (2) "With which adaptive behaviors does intelligence quotient correlate?"; (3) Are there adaptive behaviors that distinguish the above IQ groups from each other?". The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale was administered to 168 children, ages 2 to 16, who were grouped into four groups based on IQ scores and ranging from average to highly gifted (IQ 148 to 192). Findings suggest that adaptive behavior and IQ are distinct from each other and may be considered unique variables for this population. Results also indicated that the adaptive behavior of highly gifted children may be different from that of other children. Adaptive behavior correlated moderately with IQ for this group but did not correlate significantly with IQ for the other groups. Little in adaptive behavior subdomain scores was predictive of IQ. Findings suggest the value of adaptive behavior assessment as a source of additional information in the evaluation of children of all abilities. (DB)
