Abstract | This report presents the results of joint initiatives and endeavors by Unesco and the non-governmental organizations involved in the archiving of audiovisual (AV) material. The current situation regarding the education and training of personnel for film, television, and sound archives is examined and the need for the professional education and training of audiovisual archivists is identified. Included in this report are definitions of key archive staff positions and the expected standards of qualification; a compilation of all existing institutions that currently train AV archivists or have the potential to do so; a synthesis of the implementation proposals for the education of AV archivists; and specific recommendations for launching this educational program with suggestions for co-financing schemes and international cooperation. The feasibility of providing training for AV archivists through distance learning methods is examined, and the report concludes with a list of the topics a curriculum for educational programs should cover and a select bibliography of basic references for training purposes.
