AbstractA random sample of over 13,000 students participating in 4 of Minnesota's school choice programs during the 1989-90 school year were surveyed in 4 areas: (1) background and family participation; (2) reasons for participating and decision making; (3) sources for program information; and (4) satisfaction/expectations. The survey was performed to find out what kind of impacts the programs had on participants and the best way to provide students with information. Impacts included dramatic increases in some students' aspiration levels, greater success in school, and significant increases in student satisfaction. The majority of students offered academic reasons for their participation. Recommendations for providing information to students and families include using a variety of methods, recognizing that young people themselves are a resource, and providing information in many different languages. Data are presented in graphs, and the survey itself is appended, showing the percentages of students who responded to each question. (EJS)
