AbstractThis catalog is a checklist that provides an overview of objectives that can be explored in an adult literacy program. It is intended to (1) help instructors form a quick idea of what students already know; (2) show learners that they already do know a great deal; and (3) help learners and instructors plan the program ahead by making a selection to suit the individual learner's needs and interests. The catalog specifies literacy skills and objectives according to three categories: prereading/writing, applied, and technical. The prereading/writing section describes a range of skills that a learner has or needs at the beginning of the reading and writing process. The applied section looks at literacy skills from a usage perspective--how they are used in daily life. The technical section describes a variety of discrete skills involved in the reading and writing process. The applied and technical sections each describe three skill levels, with students meeting the objectives of level three probably ready to do secondary school academic work. Some literacy skills involving computer use are included in the catalog. Appendixes include needs and interests inventories in reading, writing, and mathematics; a work plan; an achievement record; sample certificates; and a resource inventory of more than 2,300 items that lists for each skill in the catalog an appropriate book, author, publisher, publication date, and relevant pages.
