| Abstract | Do Mexico's schools provide geographic learning opportunities to students and does equal opportunity to learn exist? The site for this study was Baja California's school district of Ensenada. Geographic education in urban primary and secondary schools was examined. School administrators and select teachers from 40 schools were asked about time allocated, content covered, student resources available, teacher resources available, teacher methodologies employed, and learning activities. Using the Griffin-Ford model of Latin American city structure to provide a socioeconomic framework for the school system, the results of the study showed that spending for learning materials was greater at those schools in high socioeconomic zones, and that learning opportunities were not provided uniformly in all zones. Teacher qualifications, class size, and facility size were not related to socioeconomic status. (NL) |
