Abstract	In this address, statistical data from the Ethiopian National Census (1984) and a brief account of the development of the nation from feudal rule to democratic republic are followed by a discussion of characteristics of the modern Ethiopian state. Particular attention is given to the administrative apparatus, multiethnic composition, sociocultural dimensions, and living conditions in Ethiopia. Living conditions in rural areas and their implications for rural development are delineated. Rural development, the main concern of the address, is discussed in terms of gender differences and the role of education. Concluding remarks concern the challenge that rural development presents to educators. A total of 48 references are cited. (RH)
